Basic Two Shot Mold Knowledge

What is two shot mold?

People refer to the two shot injection mold as a 2K mold, double injection mold, or multi shot injection mold. It produces final products with two materials or colors in a single shot injection molding process cycle.

With two-shot plastic injection molding, you can make many complex parts. This process allows for different colors and multi-material properties, making it ideal for various industries, including automotive, medical, consumer products, and electronics.

Difference Between Two Shot Molding And Overmolding

The Two-Shot molding process is used to “over-mold” a plastic substrate with another plastic material within a single molding cycle. This process typically involves an injection molding machine with two separate injection units and a rotary platen, which rotates 180° to switch between the core side. Both parts, substrate and overmolded substrate, are molded simultaneously.

Overmolding is a multi-shot process. The first step involves injecting the base resin into a mold cavity, where it cools and solidifies to form the substrate. The next step involves placing the substrate in an overmold cavity within a different tool.
